Unearthing Queer Ecologies
Amy Reid, Mel Gross
Unearthing Queer Ecologies is an audio/visual sound art project that uses biology and technology to reveal images and sounds of plant life growing beyond the scope of human sight and hearing. The title refers to the term Queer Ecology which theorist Catriona Sandilands describes as “recognizing that people often consider nature in terms of dualistic notions such as ‘natural and unnatural,’ ‘living or non-living,’ or ‘human or non-human,’ when in reality, nature exists in a continuous state.” The project pays homage to this idea by arvoresonically and visually documenting the growth of lavender, pansies, and mushrooms; plants that have been deemed “queer” by culture and organisms that are “queer” in the very nature of their DNA.
