Altamira 2042 is based on the displacement and encounter between artists and local communities of the Xingu River, Brazil. It is the second stage of the project Margens – Sobre Rios, Crocodilos e Vaga-lumes, by the actress and researcher Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha, a series of performances designed from the testimony of Brazilian rivers and the people who live on their banks – and on the margins of historical, political and economic processes. It is an audiovisual installation that amplifies testimonies about the catastrophe caused by the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant in Brazil. They are voices that inhabit the banks of the Xingu River: riverbank dwellers affected by the dam, indigenous peoples, social movement leaders, Altamira residents, Federal Government officials and socio-environmental institutions, the forest, the animals, the wind, the rain, and the river itself. A polyphony of beings, languages, sounds, and perspectives that intends to open the audience’s ears to voices that so many try to silence.
